Dr. Akin has developed and taught other specialists his techniques on immediate implant placement, minimally invasive oral surgery and minimally invasive dental implant surgery.  In 2016 his 'Anatomic Harmony Abutment', or AHA, technique was published in the peer reviewed journal of his specialty, the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  His technique addresses a major unsolved problem in posterior, minimally invasive, and immediate implant placement.  He has pursued a patent and trademark for this technique.

He focuses, writes, and teaches on immediate dental implant placement, dental implant temporary design, and minimally invasive implant surgery. His practice also incorporates 3D (CBCT) scanning, growth factors and IV sedation to optimize outcomes while maximizing patient recovery.

Dr. Akin lectures nationally and internationally on all topics related to dental implants with a specific focus on immediate dental implants and temporaries on implants placed the same day.  Dr. Akin also teaches 4 times per year at the Pankey Institute, which is a non-profit, post-doctoral environment for dental professionals with an emphasis on work-life balance.

From an article in InRegister

With dual doctorate degrees in medicine and dental surgery, Richard Akin is best known as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who developed and teaches specialized dental implant techniques. But unless they take a closer look at the images on the walls in his Baton Rouge office, his patients may not realize Akin also has a pedigree that leans more towards art than science.

“I’m a third-generation photographer,” he says proudly. “My grandfather arrived in the United States in the early 1920s from Sicily. He went to California and became a traveling portrait photographer back when they went door to door.”
