Scars are areas of dense fibrous tissue that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and is a natural part of the healing process. With the exception of very minor lesions, every wound results in some degree of scarring.
Hypertrophic scarring is a type of scar which can form after injury when scar tissue can make the initial wound spread or become more noticable. This type of scar is amenable to revision, although keloid scars (connective tissue which continues to grow after healing) are more difficult to treat.
After a scar excision, this new surgically created wound is sutured carefully to optimize the final cosmetic appearance. Deeper scars require multi-layered closure to heal optimally, otherwise indentations can result.
