Tori Removal in Oral Surgery

Tori removal refers to the surgical procedure involving the removal of bony outgrowths that can develop in the mouth on the upper and lower jaw. Although these bony growths are benign, there are times when they will become so large that they begin interfering with dental X-rays, speech, and chewing.

The process of tori removal and recovery typically involves the following steps:

1. Consultation:

  • Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with Dr. Akin. He will examine your medical and oral health, take X-rays, perform a physical examination, and discuss whether you are a candidate for this procedure.

2. Preoperative Instructions:

  • Dr. Akin will provide specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. This includes fasting before surgery and adjusting any medications you are taking.

3. Anesthesia:

  • The tori removal procedure is performed under intravenous sedation with additional local anesthesia. This means that you will typically be asleep during this procedure.

4. Surgical Removal:

  • Dr. Akin will carefully remove the tori using specialized dental instruments to minimize discomfort and safely remove the bony growths.

5. Postoperative Care:

  • After the procedure, your dentist will provide instructions for postoperative care. This may include recommendations for pain management, oral hygiene, and dietary restrictions.

6. Recovery:

  • Recovery time can vary depending on the complexity of the procedure and individual healing factors. Patients can often resume normal activities within two to three days.

7. Follow-up Appointments:

  • Your dentist may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress and ensure no complications.

8. Potential Discomfort:

  • Some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising may occur in the days following tori removal. Typically, patients have minor discomfort and are back to normal activities after 72 hours.

Following Dr. Akin's postoperative instructions carefully ensures a smooth recovery. If you have specific concerns or questions about tori removal and recovery, it's best to discuss them with your surgeon for personalized advice.
